Every card entered comes out of the shoe, whoever got it — a card you can see is exact information, and worth more than the count summarising it. Blackjack was a single-deck game until 1962, when Ed Thorp published Beat the Dealer and showed it was beatable. Casinos could not change the rules much without killing the game, so they changed the equipment. Here is what that cost the player, same rules throughout, only the deck count moving.
A negative number means the player is ahead. Single deck with liberal rules is a game the house loses — which is why nobody deals it that way.
